Gouache landscape painting with Mike Hernandez

Just finished a weekend workshop with Mike Hernandez learning about gouache landscape painting. The first day we spent at Vasquez rocks, where it was 93 degrees and sunny, and the second day we spent at Laguna Beach, where it was 60 degrees and overcast. I ended up sunburned both days :)

It was an educational and well-taught workshop. Mike taught us the importance of capturing the feel of a place rather than attempting to get the painting correct down the the last detail. It's amazing how that's possible with a certain palette and the right brushstrokes. I'd really like to get a portable easel and gear and do little paintings like this on all my hikes. There are so many times when my camera(admittedly not the finest camera in existence) isn't enough to capture what I want to remember about a place.

  1. These are great studies, Syd. How highly would you recommend Mike's gouache workshop? I am considering flying to LA just to take it -- would you say it would be worth going the extra mile for?
